A massive mindset shift has to happen when it comes to personal growth.
We don’t have an issue spending thirty, forty, even a couple hundred dollars on a fancy dinner, a new dress or even a bunch of random stuff on Amazon. But when it comes to using your money to help you grow, we find a million and ten reasons why it’s a waste of money.
The same thing happens when it comes to spending time on our growth. We’ll lay on the couch and scroll instagram or binge Netflix shows for hours, but we come up with reasons why we don’t have time to invest in ourselves.
This is a problem. And this has to change.
If you’re not where you want to be in life, it’s probably because you don’t think you’re worth investing in. You think that it’s great for other people, but you just couldn’t do that. You can encourage all of your friends to do it, but it’s just not your thing.
I get it. Life is busy and there are a million things screaming for your attention. But if you don’t make yourself a priority now, you never will.
Below you’re going to learn what it means to invest in yourself, why you’re worth investing in, and we’ll even brainstorm some ways that you can begin investing in yourself today.
Investing vs. Spending
We tend to have a very mixed up notion as to the differences between “investing” and “spending.”
Spending is going to the coffee shop, giving them four bucks for coffee, and then going about your day.
Investing is giving me five dollars today, and I’ll give you 10 tomorrow.
Investing looks like spending, but the difference is that you’re going to get back more than you put in in the first place. That’s the power of investing.
The same concept applies to time.
Spending time is sitting down and binging Netflix for hours. You’re not growing, you’re not changing really, just chilling and spending time.
Investing time is reading a book or taking a course on something you’re passionate about. Because you’re learning, growing, transforming, you’re going to get so much more out of that time than you ever thought possible. You’re investing time that is going to pay you back weeks, months, even years from now.
There’s nothing wrong with spending as long as it’s not in excess. I spend money on clothes and junk food. I spend time in front of the Xbox and TikTok. The problem happens when all we do is spend and we don’t invest.
Investing in yourself is one of the absolute best things you could possibly do.
You are WORTH investing in
A lot of the time, we don’t see ourselves as worth investing in. We find reason upon reason why we don’t deserve it, how we won’t apply it, how it’s not worth our time, that other things are more important. But what you don’t realize is that you are the number one thing that you should be investing in before anything else.
If you don’t take time to fill your cup, you won’t have the ability to pour out into anyone else. We can all create a list a mile long of things that are more important than investing in ourselves. But that list is just excuses. It’s the reason why we put it off again and again. Why do we do this?
Because by investing time in yourself, you’re going to have to admit that you don’t know everything. Or that you’re not a victim. Or you have to face something that happened to you.
Look, I get it. Trust me. This whole process is absolutely terrifying. I remember when I first started, it took me forever just to read a chapter and I LOVE to read. But once I finally let myself fall in love with the process, I was hooked. I binged hours and hours of YouTube videos, I took hours of online courses. I could hardly sleep at night because I was so excited about my own potential.
Whether you believe it or not, you are sitting on a goldmine of untapped potential. You are so much stronger and more capable than you could ever believe. You’re so dang intelligent and so freaking WORTHY of experiencing this freedom and excitement.
The part that breaks my heart is that so many people refuse to acknowledge this. They live a mediocre life of comfortable discomfort and never show the world their potential, never show themselves their potential. But that’s not going to be you, not this time. Because you know you deserve more, you deserve better.
How can you invest in yourself?
Ok Karleigh, I get it. I need to invest in myself. But where do I even start?
The first step is to consider how you like to learn best. Do you like to read? Listen to podcasts? Watch videos?
I personally use all of these modes of learning, but I started out with reading. I’ve always loved to read so it was an easy place for me to lean into. I wrote this post about the top books that absolutely changed my life. I highly recommend you start there to see what resonates with you.
Being a very busy single mom, it’s been the most convenient way for me to learn. I can listen in the car, while I’m doing dishes, going on a walk. For ideas on where to start, I shared my favorites on this Instagram post. You could also check out Confidence from the Ground Up with Karleigh Saunders. Just wanted to throw a shameless plug in there.
There are a lot of really good people on there (and a lot of not so good people), so be careful who you watch. I recommend checking out Brendon Burchard or Trent Shelton. They’re both extremely motivational and will push you to be your best.
My absolute favorite way to learn is through online courses. YouTube is great, but courses are put together with so much thought and effort and generally the information is higher end since the educator is charging for it. There are so many amazing courses out there that all you need to do is find someone, connect with their message, and you KNOW that the course will be wonderful and SO worth the investment. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for courses.
Courses on what, you may ask? Anything and everything.
Cooking, mindset, personal development, abuse recovery, sewing, knitting, changing the oil in your car. Whatever you want to learn, there’s a course out there. You can learn right from the comfort of your own home. It’s absolutely incredible.
I know that investing time and money in anything is scary. You never know if it’s going to be worth it. But you’ll never know unless you try. Choosing to invest in myself and my future was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Whether you want to change careers, learn a new skill, or break limiting beliefs, invest in yourself. You are worth the investment. Your future is worth the investment. You’ve got this.
