3 Steps to Quit Quitting

“If you can offer a class on quitting quitting, that would be awesome.”

I received this message on Facebook awhile ago and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

So many people struggle with follow through. There are so many reasons why this happens, but it usually comes down to not believing that you’re capable of actually finishing.

We’ve taught ourselves that we don’t follow through. We start and then quit. So we don’t trust ourselves.

As difficult as this seems, it truly is possible.

Find out why you keep quitting things (Why Test)

If you find yourself in a cycle of quitting, you have to figure out why. There’s always a reason why we do what we do, even if we don’t know it right away.

You need to take some time to dig deep and find your why.
Once you know why you’re quitting, you know what you need to work on.

Are you constantly quitting because you’re afraid of what would happen if you actually succeeded?

Are you in a cycle of quitting because you don’t believe you could ever possibly succeed so you sabotage it before it has a chance to hurt you?

Reasons why we quit run so much deeper than you think. And until you address those, you won’t be able to break free from it.

Why is it important to you?

Once you’ve figured out why you’ve been in a quitting cycle, you need to decide why this is the thing you’re determined to see through.

Do your own form of the Why Test to figure out why you’re going to stick to it.

Maybe you’re determined to actually do the 5k race. Why?

Because you want the experience of training for it.

Why?

Because you want to know that you can.

Why?

Because back in middle school your PE teacher made fun of you because you hurt yourself on the track so you want to make sure you prove them wrong.

That’s why I got into Cross Country as a senior in high school.

That Why is what pulled me through even when my coach told me

I wasn’t allowed on the group run because she didn’t want to wait for me because I wasn’t fast enough.

Once you have that why, you have something to lean on when obstacles come your way.

Life WILL happen. Obstacles WILL come. Instead of avoiding them or being fearful, just be prepared. Getting settled in your why will help you do that.

Set goals and rewards that correlate with them

I am a very reward driven person. I love to work for something when I know that I’m going to get something out of it. I used to be really embarrassed to admit that, but it’s how my brain works and I figured out how to make it work for me.

So set goals and decide on a reward that you’ll get once you reach it.

For example, after the 5k race, go shopping and get yourself a new pair of shoes.

It can be something big or something small.

I have a list of goals I’m working towards and the rewards are as small as a 10 dollar shirt on Amazon and as big as tattoos.

Whatever will motivate you, use that. But you have to keep yourself on track. You don’t get it unless you finish.

This does two things: one, it motivates you to keep going so you can get that thing.

But also, once you finish, this tells your brain that it deserves to be rewarded when you see things through.

So when you get this thing, really allow yourself to celebrate yourself and internalize that success.

Every time you see that thing, or look back on memories of the trip you took, you’re going to remember that it’s because you did what you set out to do which will send out reward signals to your brain.

Quitting is a hard habit to break, but it is possible. You deserve to see things through, even when it’s hard. If you commit to yourself, if you believe that you can do it, then you will!

Commit to the journey, commit to the work.

Figure out why you keep quitting. Find out Why this is important to and dig deep on that Why. Then reward yourself once you do it!

Girl – you deserve to be proud of yourself. You deserve to know what it feels like when you follow through.
