Books that Changed my Life

It’s crazy to look back and realize that a book literally changed my life. I’m a pretty big reader anyway – I usually burn through 2-3 books a week. So while yes, I do read a lot, it also means that the ones that stand out are extra special. I realized I kept telling people to read this book or that book and decided that I would put my favorites all in one place.

So this is by no means a comprehensive list of the books that I’ve read. But this is a list of the ones that I recommend on a regular basis.

High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard

HPH wasn’t the first personal development book that I read, but it’s the one that impacted my life in such a profound way that it started an avalanche of realizations and change. When I first found myself going down the self help rabbit hole I found a lot of what is referred to as “woo woo” type stuff. The law of attraction and all that. At the time, I was very closed off to any of that
What I love about HPH is that it’s all purely scientific. Brendon Burchard studied the top 15% of High Performers in the world and found the habits they had in common.
This book is more than just “here’s what they did.” Burchard lays it out in a very clear way that makes the habits applicable to your life so you can start making changes today.
This book literally changed my life. Highly highly recommend it!

Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo

I found out about Marie Forleo when I started diving into the entrepreneurial world. She’s a big deal and once you start to get to know her you understand why. Forleo was on Amy Porterfield’s podcast, Online Marketing Made Easy, and I immediately fell in love with her.
She’s so real and raw in a way that I didn’t see many people being, especially those in the world of business. She doesn’t mind dropping an F bomb or two and she doesn’t hesitate to say it like it is. After listening to her podcast for a year or so, her book came out and of course I got it.
“Everything is figureoutable” is something Forleo’s mom used to say to her whenever she felt stuck. She takes this philosophy to this book and it is AMAZING. This book was the kick in the pants I needed to finally start living the life I want and cut the excuses. That book plays a big part in why I’m here sharing this with you.
Whether you want to rock your own business, get a raise, or just go after a dream you’ve always had, this book is for you. But beware – it will destroy just about all the excuses that you come with for not going after it.

You are a Badass by Jen Sincero

This was the very first personal development book I read and I’ll be honest, when I first read it, I rolled my eyes a lot. I didn’t believe what it was saying. I didn’t believe that it was actually possible to live a life that was bigger than the one I was living. But it planted a seed that, just maybe, there was more to live. There was more to life than just barely surviving. Maybe I could actually do the things that I desperately wanted to do.
Since then I’ve read that book more times than I can count. I’ve highlighted, underlined, starred, tagged so many parts, I’d never expect someone else to be able to borrow my copy. But I highly encourage everyone to do the same. Read it once, then read it again with a pencil to underline, and then again with a highlighter. Every time you read it, you’ll see that new things stand out as important. And you’ll be able to see your progression as you go.

Codependent No More by Melody Beattie

This Book has such a dramatic story that goes with it. My best friend was telling me about this book for over a year and I finally bought it just to tell her I bought the dang thing. But I didn’t read it for several months.
When I finally picked it up off of the nightstand, I couldn’t put it down. This book is for people who have been in dysfunctional relationships, including abusive ones. Or for those who love someone who is or has been in one. It is incredibly powerful and the stories used illustrate that none of us are nearly as alone as we feel we are.
This book is absolutely incredible and deserves to be on every woman’s bookshelf. Even if you haven’t experienced a dysfunctional relationship or ever thought about codependency, there is so much to learn. Chances are, you know someone who has. This book will help you get to know their situation so you can love them and be there for them in the way they need you to be.

You are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero

If you have struggles surrounding money, this book is for YOU. By the way if you:

Don’t believe you deserve money

Say things like ‘money doesn’t grow on trees.’

Have an issue with wealthy people

Feel like money makes you bad

Or any variation of any of those…

You have an issue with money. I didn’t know that I had so many money blocks that I wasn’t even allowing myself to get ahead. I read this book again and again and each time I get something new out of it. The more I read it, the deeper I go and I’m able to root out the things that are holding me back.

Don’t Keep Your Day Job by Cathy Heller

So I know that not everyone wants to go off and start their own business. But I truly believe that this book could help just about everyone. Cathy Heller is probably the sweetest human on the face of the planet. She has a podcast by the same name and if you’ve listened to it you know what I mean. She writes the same way she talks – with so much empathy, joy, and love for the world.

Cathy inspires everyone to go after their dreams and do what they love. Even if you don’t want to start a business, get this book on your shelf. She will inspire you to take action on what makes your soul happy, regardless of what it is.

There is so much power inside of a book. I read so many books I don’t know that I can list them all. Ever since I was young, books have been my constant escape from the world. As an adult, they’re the north star that guide me to where I want to go. I really encourage you to grab any of these books, if not all. They’re incredibly powerful and if applied will change your life.

The “if applied” is the most important part of that statement. You can read all day long but not actually apply anything that you learn. You have to take the time to actually implement what you’ve learned. IF you do that, you will see your life completely change right before your eyes.

Let me know which book you’re grabbing first!

If you want to keep the learning going, check out Episode 3 of the Confidence from the Ground Up Podcast. It is a combination of everything that I’ve learned and laid out as the framework that I give to my clients and make sure they have a solid understanding before we move on. Give it a listen and then let me know what you think!
